PLAN THE OVERNIGHT
Camping near Mount Shasta and McCloud
Choose the kind of night you want before choosing a campsite: a developed campground near your day trip, a mountain campground with limited services, or a carefully prepared wilderness overnight. Each has different rules, access and equipment needs. A flat patch on a satellite image is not evidence of a legal campsite.

Start with a developed campground
For a Mount Shasta mountain setting, research McBride Springs and Panther Meadows through the Forest Service. They are different elevations and access situations, so choose based on the outing you intend to make and the facilities you need. Confirm the current season and services directly; a campground listing is not evidence that water, roads or sites will be available on arrival.
For a river-focused McCloud trip, Recreation.gov lists Fowlers Campground on the Upper McCloud River with campsites, drinking water and vault toilets. Use the official listing to check your dates, site dimensions and booking information. A campsite that fits a tent does not necessarily fit your vehicle or trailer. Keep a confirmed alternative if arriving without a reservation or a reliable availability check.

Castle Crags State Park
Consider a separate regional base south of Mount Shasta, using State Parks for camping arrangements and current restrictions.
Dispersed camping requires a boundary check
Do not treat all national forest land as interchangeable. Forest Service order 14-26-06 restricts camping and fires in the mapped Mount Shasta Plantation area outside developed recreation sites through July 29, 2027. Order 14-25-23 restricts overnight camping outside designated developed campgrounds in the McCloud River Loop area through September 30, 2027. These were the posted orders at our November 1, 2026 review; check for replacements or additional restrictions before travel.
Read the actual maps and identify the parcel and road involved. Existing tire tracks, a fire ring or another person's tent do not establish permission. Where dispersed camping is allowed, plan your own drinking water, sanitation, food storage and waste removal. If you cannot determine the rules for a location, choose a verified developed option instead.

Treat a wilderness overnight as a separate trip
Mount Shasta Wilderness guidance requires permits and packing out solid human waste, and prohibits dogs and wood fires. Read the current rules for campsite placement, group size and stay limits before setting an overnight objective. A camp higher on the mountain can add wind, cold and water-planning demands; do not choose it solely because it shortens the next day's route.
Use the Horse Camp and Helen Lake field guides to understand two well-known south-side locations. They are different environments, and neither guide is a reservation or a current safety assessment. Start with the mountain route you are prepared to undertake, then decide whether and where an overnight fits.

Check fire rules before packing the stove
Check both California campfire-permit requirements and current land-manager restrictions for the exact site. A permit does not override a closure or fire prohibition. Plan to arrive with enough daylight to read posted notices and find the assigned or legal site. Buy supplies before driving into the forest, and leave the area ready for the next visitor rather than depending on an unavailable bin or water system.
