THE MOUNTAIN, DOCUMENTED
Horse Camp · Shasta Alpine Hut
A stone cabin, a century of climbers, a quieter place beneath the summit.
The Sierra Club Foundation’s historic stone hut and surrounding private property sit at timberline on the south side. Low-impact campsites and a seasonal spring make this an important hiking destination and climbing base.

Planning, access and history
Approach
The owner describes a roughly 1.6-mile approach from Bunny Flat with about 1,000 feet of climbing. Obtain the wilderness permit before departing.
Camping and facilities
The owner lists $5 per tent and $3 per solo bivy, with a suggested $2 day-use donation. Spring and toilet service are seasonal; provide your own water in winter. Recheck prices and operations at the source.
Respect the property
Owner rules prohibit campfires, pets and pack animals, bicycles, motor vehicles, drones and aircraft, with stated service-animal provisions. Use existing campsites and keep washing away from water.
Terrain and hazards
Higher than a day hike
Continuing above the cabin toward Helen Lake changes the trip from an approach hike to exposed alpine climbing terrain.
