VisitShasta.org

Privacy, rights & credits.

Updated November 1, 2026 · Current beta

VisitShasta.org is an independent mountain atlas. Original application material is proprietary. Third-party data, imagery, fonts and photographs retain their own licenses and credits.

Your notebook stays in your browser.

Saved places, waypoints and custom routes are stored in this browser’s local storage. There is no visitor account, cloud notebook, on-site email form, payment form, ad-network code or audience analytics in this beta. Notebook and GPX imports are processed locally. Clearing site data removes the local notebook; export a backup first. A shared device’s browser profile can expose your saved information to other users of that profile.

The private owner dashboard uses a secure, HttpOnly session cookie for authentication, expiring after eight hours. Owner drafts, publication history and uploaded content are stored on the hosting service. Login protection keeps a temporary keyed identifier derived from the requesting IP address to limit repeated attempts. These controls are separate from visitors’ local notebooks.

Connections the map makes.

Your browser requests map tiles from Esri, USGS, OpenStreetMap and AWS/Mapzen, and live products from the National Weather Service, National Avalanche Center, NIFC’s ArcGIS service and USGS. Those operators receive normal network information such as your IP address, requested tiles or selected forecast coordinate. A forecast request can disclose the location you selected on the map. Opening an external reference is a visit to that publisher’s website.

“Find my location” asks for your browser’s permission. The resulting location is used for the map marker or, when requested, to sort nearby hiking guides by straight-line distance. This app does not upload a GPS track or imported file to an atlas server. UI fonts, map labels and gallery photographs are served from the atlas itself.

The current site is delivered through ChatGPT Sites and Cloudflare. Hosting providers may process request logs and set security or bot-management cookies, even though the atlas itself adds no analytics cookies. Their own policies apply: OpenAI privacy policy and Cloudflare privacy policy.

Advertising.

Contact Info@VisitShasta.org about direct sponsorships. Available placements display an advertising invitation; paid placements are labeled Sponsored and link to the advertiser’s destination. Sponsor images are served by this site’s hosting service. The application does not add ad-network scripts, tracking pixels, audience analytics or advertising cookies. Clicking a sponsor link visits that advertiser’s website, whose own privacy policy applies. Selecting an email link opens your email app, and sending a message shares your email address and message with the site operator. Sponsorship does not change editorial rankings, official warning text or route-access evidence. Additional advertising providers would require an updated disclosure before activation.

Application rights.

Original VisitShasta.org application code, design, branding and original editorial material are reserved to the project owner to the extent protected by law. No open-source license for those materials is offered by this version. Using the website does not grant permission to redistribute or operate a copy of the application. This notice does not limit applicable law, third-party rights, or permissions granted for an earlier copy. Browser-delivered HTML, CSS and JavaScript remain inspectable.

OpenStreetMap data.

Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors. The OSM-derived databases, including the OSM-derived trail network and route geometry, are available under the Open Database License 1.0. This data license is separate from application-code rights. It permits commercial use subject to its terms, including attribution and applicable database share-alike obligations.

Machine-readable data: trails · grades · roads · places · land · buildings · water · route network. Data license notice.

Terrain, imagery & agency sources.

Elevation is derived from Mapzen / AWS Terrain Tiles, with underlying source credits. Satellite imagery is credited in the map to Esri and its listed providers; imagery has separate terms and is not included in data downloads. Topographic tiles are USGS The National Map. Do not assume imagery or a map view is a redistributable offline image pack.

USFS land classifications and agency references are identified in land provenance, conditions provenance and place/source records. Copyrighted articles remain at their publishers. A reference link does not grant rights to that article. Wikipedia and Commons materials retain their own licenses.

Photograph credits.

Software & fonts.

MapLibre GL JS is distributed with its bundled license. Open Sans map glyphs retain their font license. UI fonts are DM Sans and Manrope, self-hosted under their DM Sans and Manrope SIL Open Font Licenses.

Using mountain information.

The atlas is a planning and reference tool. Coverage is incomplete, source dates vary, and a map line does not establish legal access or current safety. Grade, slope and shadows are terrain estimates. Missing warnings or unrated avalanche products are not an all-clear. Check the original land-manager and forecast sources, current conditions and your own capabilities.
