MCCLOUD, CALIFORNIA
Visit McCloud: historic downtown, waterfalls and forest outings
Make McCloud a place to spend time, rather than simply the turnoff for a waterfall photograph. Pair a downtown visit with one outdoor destination, then leave room for food and the drive back. The river, rail trail and mountain approaches are different outings with different access needs.

Begin with the town's mill history
McCloud's chamber describes a former company mill town with a nationally registered historic downtown. Walking the downtown area gives a history-focused visit a clear center. Start there if your group wants shops, a meal and a shorter day, or use it as the town portion of a larger outdoor plan.
McCloud lies along Highway 89 east of Interstate 5. Check the actual route to your chosen destination before leaving town: a river recreation area, a ski area and an east-side Mount Shasta trailhead are not interchangeable directions. Buy what you need before committing to a forest-road drive, and allow enough time to return without making dinner depend on an optimistic hiking pace.

Choose how to experience McCloud Falls
Lower, Middle and Upper Falls are separate stops along the McCloud River. A river-trail outing is a different commitment from a short viewpoint visit. Choose an actual destination, parking plan and return route before starting, rather than treating every photograph of the falls as the same location.
Seasonal road access deserves a fresh check. At our November 1, 2026 review, Forest Service order 14-26-12 restricted motor vehicles on specified Mount Shasta and McCloud roads and areas from October 5, 2026 through May 1, 2027. Read the order and maps for your route; do not assume a summer driving loop is available. A vehicle closure also does not establish that a winter walk is suitable for your group.
McCloud-area recreation ideas
Identify the falls and other destinations before checking the managing agency's latest access notices.
Official seasonal area and road closure
Read the dated order and its route maps before planning a vehicle approach.
Consider a rail-trail outing or a mountain approach
The Great Shasta Rail Trail reuses a former railway corridor between McCloud and Burney for nonmotorized recreation. Use the association's detailed trail map to choose a particular access point and out-and-back segment. The overall corridor length is not a promise of an uninterrupted trip, and a trail described as a rail trail still deserves a surface, weather and access check.
For Mount Shasta's eastern approaches, start with the Clear Creek and Brewer Creek field guides. Read their original access and condition sources before driving. These are separate mountain objectives, not quick additions to a waterfall walk. Our 3D atlas focuses on the mountain's roughly 11-mile core; the McCloud visitor guide reaches beyond that coverage without claiming every regional trail is mapped.

Plan the overnight and the evening separately
Do not assume that a river pullout is a legal campsite. The Forest Service's McCloud River Loop order prohibits overnight camping outside designated developed campgrounds in its mapped restriction area through September 30, 2027. Use our camping guide to compare developed options and verify availability directly. For dinner and evening plans, check the restaurant and events guides against the businesses' and organizers' current information.
