THE MOUNTAIN, DOCUMENTED

Helen Lake

An alpine climbing camp in the heart of Avalanche Gulch.

The Helen Lake basin is a commonly used bivouac area for two-day Avalanche Gulch climbs. Snow often conceals the basin; this is an exposed mountain camp rather than a serviced lakeside campground.

Terrain and hazards

Rockfall and snow

The route above and below camp changes with the snowpack; later-season loss of snow cover increases rockfall exposure. Crampons, ice axe, helmet and snow-travel skills are part of MSAC’s route guidance.
